Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish? Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
So what do you think about the state of our country these days? There's not a lot of hope, is there? And yet in today's passage, we see what happened when the evil and barbaric Ninevites were willing to change. Notice they didn't try to balance out the scales by doing "good things"; they simply turned from their evil. That's another way of saying they repented. God's immutable holiness demands that sin be punished; His equally immutable love and justice demands that the repentant sinner be forgiven.
May our nation take notice and may we turn in droves to a holy and forgiving God. May the church stand in the gap and pray for our leaders and this nation, which came about by God’s blessing. May we turn from our evil ways. The power of repentance releases the power of God to work as He delights.
Humbly praying that God would bless America,
