John 5:8-9

Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your bed and walk." And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.
John 5:8-9

We find Jesus here speaking to a paralyzed man, lying on his bed by a pool with many others with various ailments, waiting for the water to be stirred up by an angel. The belief was that if they were the first to make it in the water when this happened, then they would be healed. Jesus' words to this man were, "Rise, take up your bed and walk." Now that's kind of a cruel thing to say to a paralyzed man, but Jesus had a better idea for him than waiting for an angel to blow bubbles in a pool. He just told him to get up! He asked this man to do the impossible and this man, without a word of protest or argument, receives strength and gets up.

You know when you see your problem as more than you can handle, you will be open to receive strength from the Lord. And notice that Jesus didn't just tell him to get up and walk, but He told him to "Take his bed with him." Jesus didn't want him returning to his religion or superstitious beliefs. He didn't want him to come back to this place the next time he gets sick. Jesus made him "well or whole," so he would never need to come back to this place of trying to reach God in his own strength again, because he had come to know the grace of God.

God help us to remember as well that, by grace we have been saved through faith, and that not of ourselves; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8).
