Proverbs 22:1

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.
Proverbs 22:1

Here we are told that we are to make a conscious decision, to choose a good reputation over riches. Being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold (NLT). It's far better to have a good reputation since our reputation is something that follows us around everywhere we go and, unlike riches which can grow wings and fly away (Proverbs 23:5), our reputation tells a lot about who we are. We should always be seeking to have our name cleared of anything that may harm us.

For example, are we known to be honest people or do we risk throwing our reputation out of the window in order to seal the deal, even if it means to do it deceitfully? The love of money can cause us to do all sorts of evil things. In 1 Timothy 6:10, it tells us that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. It can cause some to stray from their faith in their greediness and brings many sorrows. It sounds pretty obvious, why would anyone choose riches over a good name? Yet we see it time and time again -- people selling out just for a little more. Still, God will take the time to remind us so that we can be made more into the image of His Son and live a life that glorifies Him.
