John 17:4

I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which you have given Me to do.
John 17:4

These words from Jesus' prayer summarize His life with simple clarity. By John's gospel account, we are allowed, as it were, to listen in on this intimate prayer, and benefit from it. This can indeed become our own life verse, for what better prayer can we pray than, "Father, help me to glorify You on the earth. Help me to finish the work which You have given me to do."

Many of us do not know why we are here, so we create our own purpose. Some assume, "I am here to fulfill my own version of the American dream." Olympic commentators commend those who dreamed big and fulfilled their dream by bringing home a medal or two. But what is God's "dream" for us? What is His purpose for our lives?

In this simple prayer, Jesus declares His life purpose and His life mission. His purpose is to glorify God the Father on the earth. His mission is to finish the work the Father had given Him to do. And thus it is also revealed that we have the same purpose and same mission.

Jesus' prayer in John 17 is an example of the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 5 and reveals the same purpose and mission. The first request is that the Father would cause His name to be reverenced and glorified. The second request is that the Gospel of the Kingdom would come to all the earth. And the third request is that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. So let us glorify His name by bringing the Gospel of His Kingdom to all the world and doing His will, for it is our purpose and mission.
