Psalm 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4

I know this is a familiar verse and is often quoted but David's perspective as a shepherd really brings light to this promise. As the shepherd moves his sheep from the lowlands in the winter to the highlands in the summer, they need to go through the valleys to get there. The valleys are places of rich pastures and much water, but they are also places of danger and storms and wild animals lurking everywhere.

The "valley of the shadow of death" is as much God's right path for us as the "green pastures and still waters." But we can look to the shepherd for safety and protection. It's His presence that we need because the valleys can be filled with fear. But if we look and follow our Shepherd, we will soon see that He knows where He's going, where He's taking us, and the way to get there.

Letting Him lead,

Pastor Gerard Deleeuw
