John 17:1

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that your Son may also glorify You.”
John 17:1

Thus began Jesus’ prayer on the night before His crucifixion. His prayer also contains these stunning requests: “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with you before the world was” (John 17:5). “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which you have given Me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24).

It is only when we see the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His resurrection from the dead as the apex of the glory of God that we see it correctly. These events were planned before the foundation of the world and are the culmination of the redemptive work of God as revealed and prophesied in the Old Testament. They are also revealed as the foundation and basis of everlasting life in the New Testament. In the age to come, God will wipe away every tear from our eyes, and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain, and all things will be made new. But Jesus will forever be known as the Lamb, the name that epitomizes the glory of the cross.

For all eternity future, it will be sung, “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power! You have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation!” Once, we were worthy only of His wrath, but in that day, we shall see and enjoy His glory forevermore. We shall see Him face to face, and delight in His amazing grace—forever!
