Nehemiah 8:10

Then he (Ezra) said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
Nehemiah 8:10

God's people had gathered together to hear Ezra read the law of God. As the Scriptures were read aloud, each person began to understand how good and righteous God was, and how far they really were from God's perfect will. The sound of weeping filled the air, and sorrow for their sin filled their hearts.

Because the people turned away from their sin and turned toward the Lord, Ezra, Nehemiah, and the Levite priests told the people that God had forgiven them, and told them to return to their homes and celebrate the Lord's forgiveness.

When you and I are confronted with the truth of who we are in light of God's righteousness, we become grieved to our very core. That is exactly as it should be, and that same grief makes us gratefully aware of God's great promise of forgiveness to each of us through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, who took our lethal penalty upon Himself. A gift that we are to accept with gladness.

Brothers and sisters, we are free to celebrate the Lord's grace. Let's leave our sorrow behind as we allow the joy of the Lord to be our strength!
