1 Samuel 1:11

Then she made a vow and said, "O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head."
1 Samuel 1:11

We read here about a vow that was made from a woman whose heart was broken. Hannah was one of two wives of a man named Elkanah. Earlier, we are told that Peninnah, Elkanah's other wife, was able to have children but Hannah was not because the Lord had closed her womb. Every year, they would go up to worship and sacrifice to the Lord but every time they went Peninnah would provoke her severely causing Hannah to weep and not eat. Then on this particular day, she just could not contain it any longer. She poured out her heart and made this vow to the Lord. And regardless of the affliction she had to endure year after year, she remained a faithful servant of the Lord.

It wasn't that God didn't know what she was going through. He knew all along but needed to prepare her for the plans that He had for her and her child that she would soon bear. There are times where we say, "Hello Lord, are You still there? Because I can sure use You!" It might seem like things are not going our way but the Lord is preparing us to use us. It is there where we need to remain faithful and pour out our burdens and lay them at the Lord's feet. In doing so, we can walk away like Hannah no longer sad (1 Samuel 1:18), even in our affliction.
