Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1

What a way to begin a book. If you're the God who created the universe and everything in it, start at the beginning. There is so much in this one verse. For instance, it is the answer to the question, "When did God start to exist?" This verse shows us He's beyond time and actually started time with "In the beginning."

Because this is the first verse of the Bible, it is one of the most attacked verses. If we believe the Bible, then we believe God created the heavens and the earth and not the Big Bang. So atheists and non-believers spend a lot of time hammering at this verse because if they can get people not to believe the first verse of the Bible, they can cast doubts on the rest of the book.

This verse is interesting for its unapologetic explanation of the creation of the universe. How did God do all of this? Who is God? When was the beginning? We can make guesses, we can use science, and we do get some of the answers in the rest of the Bible, but God doesn't have to explain Himself.

The word for God here is the Hebrew word, Elohim, the Supreme God. The same word will be used in the first 12 verses of the Bible and 26 times in total. This is the God that started time, that created everything and wrote a book that has changed billions of lives over the years. It all started with Him.

Believing in the Creator,

Pastor Ron Kitchell
