1 John 4:1-3

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
1 John 4:1-3

Modern-day cults tend to do one of two things – they minimize the deity of Jesus Christ or they deny the saving work of Him. This is why John tells us not to believe every spirit. We shouldn't believe everything we hear that sounds good or sounds religious.

One litmus test to give those things you hear is whether or not those saying it believe Jesus Christ is Lord and came in the flesh. Some will say He isn't God, even though they believe He was a man, and others will say that God never came in the flesh to earth.

Yet Jesus' saving work could only be done if He was God and if He was a man. It took the sacrifice of God Himself to redeem us, not of just any man, and it took Jesus being a real man in order for the sacrifice to be valid.

If you're told something is of God, check whether or not it lines up with the Bible. If it's taking anything away from Jesus' deity or His humanness, it is wrong and you shouldn't believe it.

Teach me to know Your truth,

Pastor Ron Kitchell
