Exodus 1:17

But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive.
Exodus 1:17

Don't you love this verse? It should be our basis for God's thoughts towards civil disobedience. So many times we as Christians feel this need to protest everything we disagree with. But we're also supposed to honor the king. Here, the midwives are being told to do something totally against God's will, so they wisely choose to disobey the king and follow God.

Daniel did the same thing in chapter six of his book when he was told he wasn't to pray to any God but the king. The book tells us Daniel went home and prayed like he always did. He didn't start a protest group against the king. He didn't try to get a petition together. Daniel just did what the LORD wanted him to do.

These midwives feared God more than they did the king. That's why the Holy Spirit gives us their names in verse 15. Oh, what the LORD could do in our lives if we feared God more than anything else! So many times we make decisions not because they please God, but because we're trying to avoid displeasing men. If these midwives would have said, "We better listen to the king because he could have us killed," there would be no Moses and no country of Israel. Do you want to please God more than you want to please people?

Following Jesus,

Pastor Ron Kitchell
