Matthew 6:13

Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Matthew 6:13

This is the sixth and final request in the Lord's Prayer. It is important because even though we are saved, we still need to be holy. God's name is blasphemed when those claiming to be Christians fall into sin. This request is an earnest plea that God would deliver us from the temptations that so easily beset us.

The word of God is the key to defeating temptation. We need to not only pray for God's deliverance, but we need to saturate our minds with the scriptures because they are the ONLY defense against the schemes of the evil one. Ephesians 6 gives us the strategy, and Matthew 4 gives us the example of how temptation was fought: by the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

It would be wise to memorize the verses that address the temptations and sins to which we fall most often. If you are an angry person, memorize James 1:20: "The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God." Don't count to ten, quote the verse. Don't let anger take control of you, but ask God for strength in the midst of the irritation.

It's the Father’s responsibility to make us holy, but we need to do our part in using the Sword of the Word of God to fight the sin in our lives. Are you tempted to greed? Remember the words of Jesus that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Are you tempted by lust? The Bible says, "No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly." Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God."

Do not be deceived by the evil one, my brethren.
