1 John 3:1

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
1 John 3:1

So great is His love, that while we were His enemies, God sent His Son to die for us (Romans 5:8). Because of His great love with which He loves us, if we accept God's free gift of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, we become children of God. The world can't understand our love for God because they don't understand God.

Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure (1 John 3:3). If verse 1 tells us what we are, then verse 3 tells us what we do. But what is our proper motivation to purify ourselves? When an unbeliever sins, he is a creature sinning against his creator. When a Christian sins, they are a child sinning against their Father. The unbeliever rebels against the law. The believer sins against love. To the unbeliever, the phrase "The fear of the Lord" means to live in terror. For the children of God, the fear of the Lord means to give honor and respect to our Father. Therefore our motivation to purify ourselves is not out of fear or that our loving Father will hurt us, but out of fear that we might hurt our loving Father.

Obeying in love,

Pastor Rod Harris
