John 3:26

And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified - Behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!"
John 3:26

This story sounds familiar. Mark 9:38 says, "Now John answered Him, saying, 'Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us.'" This isn't the first time we hear of someone being jealous for their ministry. In Numbers 11:27-28, a young man told Moses that Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp and Joshua steps up, probably upset because they didn't follow directions and says, "Moses my lord, forbid them."

John the Baptist here responds by saying, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven." What a great response. Look guys, they can't do anything unless the Lord is in it. John the Baptist recognized that his ministry was given to him by God. We can get like that sometimes, we get jealous or feel threatened when God is doing a work someplace else. We would be wise to recognize that we can't do anything unless it's from the Lord. So if there is someone down the street, street witnessing, praise God for it. He wouldn't be able to do it unless the Lord gave it to him.
