Proverbs 26:20

Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.
Proverbs 26:20

Unlike California, many other states in the US thin out the overgrown forest so that when a fire starts, it doesn't have endless fuel to consume and wreak havoc, destroying homes, businesses, and communities. Trees act as fuel for fires. When there are less trees, there is less fuel, and the fires go out faster.

The same goes for gossip as the comparison is being made by the author above. Less gossip means less strife. The more inclined you are to share stories and juicy details that aren't yours to share, you save yourself and others from the drama it creates. It really is a simple concept. Gossip hurts people and you can avoid hurting people by simply not doing it. Let's remember the words of James, "And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity…"

It certainly requires some self-control to limit our words, yet the Holy Spirit is our helper in this area. He is looking to produce fruit in your life and self-control is one of those fruits. So let's spare others and ourselves the hurt and the drama our words can cause by taming our tongues.
