Genesis 35:19-21

So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day. Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
Genesis 35:19-21

My wife is such a blessing for me and through her godliness and kindness helps me draw closer to the Lord daily. She seems the opposite of Rachel, the love of Jacob's life. In the Bible, God changes names of people frequently and they tend to use the latter names after that. Abram became Abraham and Sarai became Sarah and the Bible never uses their old names again.

Yet Jacob is very rarely called by his new name, Israel. It happens right here after his wife, Rachel, dies. As much as Jacob loved Rachel, she seemed to be a stumbling block more often than not. She steals her father's false idols and her jealousy of her sister causes a competition in childbirth between Leah, Rachel, and their maidservants.

Then interestingly, right after she dies, Jacob, meaning heel-catcher, is called Israel, meaning Prince With God or Wrestled With God. Husbands and wives, are you blessing each other or are you hindering your spouse?

Wanting more of God's love,

Pastor Ron Kitchell
