Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1

The precious culmination of Paul's personal testimony of failure in Romans 7 is the triumphant "therefore" in 8:1. Even though we are wonderfully saved, like Paul, we sometimes end up doing the very things we hate. We sin, despite our good intentions. But the good news is this: there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

In our exuberance over this tremendous good news, let us please not marginalize the word "condemnation." This is the bullet Jesus took for us. This is the bullet we dodged. It shall not befall us if we are in Christ. But even though we have been saved from this fate, we should never lose the sense of dreadfulness of what we all deserve. Let us not be unmindful of the unspeakable horror of being the object of wrath by One with infinite power.

Revelation 20:15 should move us: "And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire." This is the freight train we avoided. Compared to hell, all the evils of this world are trivial. If that sounds like an overstatement to you, then perhaps you haven't accurately envisioned hell.

The clearer we understand—and even feel—the enormity of the fate we have been spared, the more our appreciation will soar for the gift of God in Christ Jesus. So let us rejoice over what we have escaped, as well as what we have been given by God in Christ: no condemnation and everlasting pleasure forever at His right hand.
