1 Peter 5:8-9

1 Peter 5:8-9

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

1 Peter 5:8-9

Our Christian journey isn’t just about personal growth; it’s also a spiritual battle. Peter uses stark imagery to remind us of our adversary who does not relent. A male lion only roars when he has cornered his prey. He’s powerful but lazy. This vivid imagery reminds us of the very real spiritual warfare we face daily.

It is so often helpful to be able to identify the enemies’ attacks. You just don’t feel right, and everything seems to be going wrong. You’re in a spiritual battle. Are you aware of the enemy’s tactics in your life? How can you “resist him, standing firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:9)? By simply remembering you’re not alone in this battle. Practice spiritual alertness by being mindful of your thoughts, actions, and the influences around you. Stand firm in your faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brothers and sisters throughout the world. And God is always with you.
