1 Samuel 15:22

1 Samuel 15:22

Then Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.”
1 Samuel 15:22

There are scriptures throughout the Bible which can be difficult to do. How many of us want to love our enemies? (Matthew 5:44). How many of us want to deal with conflict face-to-face instead of gossiping behind people’s backs? (Matthew 18). Indeed, how many of us want to go through life without complaining? (Philippians 2:14).

Yet it is obeying the Lord in the difficult times of life that delights Him. Before the verse above, Saul was told by Samuel, speaking for God, to utterly wipe out every Amalekite and every animal, which was certainly a difficult task for sure. But Saul didn’t do it, keeping some of the people and animals alive. For his sin, Saul would have the kingdom removed from him.

You have not been asked to do anything as difficult as Saul, but all of us Christians have been asked to do hard things, including some of those listed above. We might feel we’re the most religious people in the world, but are we obeying the Lord’s word? If not, let’s start today.

Help me obey you in all things, Lord,
