2 Corinthians 10:17

But he who glories, let him glory in the Lord.

2 Corinthians 10:17

As a child, we are taught not to brag or be boastful in things we do. After all, it’s not appropriate to draw attention to ourselves in a way that makes us seem better than others. As we grow older, however, we tend to accumulate accomplishments that can be sometimes hard to contain. Patting oneself on the back is not only accepted, but it is often encouraged to validate one’s worth. This is where the Christian can find themselves torn between accepting a compliment and not overly self-inflated. It is, however, possible to accept a compliment and share the gospel.

The Bible tells us in several places in Scripture that boasting is fine as long as it is directed at the one who gave the victory. Psalm 44:8 tells us that, “In God we boast all day long.” And we read in Jeremiah 9:24, “Let him who glories, glory in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness on the earth.” God gifts each of us and works great things through us. So, if we must boast, then let us boast in the Lord and feel okay to say, “Thank you” to compliments. As long as the compliment is followed up with, “The Lord gave me the strength to do so.” Boast of His goodness today and always.

God Bless,
