2 Kings 1:9-10

2 Kings 1:9-10

Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. So he went up to him; and there he was, sitting on the top of a hill. And he spoke to him: “Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down!’” So Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men.” And fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.

2 Kings 1:9-10

When you are walking in the will of God amazing things can happen. For one thing, by walking in His will you won’t ask for things that are against His will. Your ultimate goal would be to see God’s will accomplished on “earth as it is in heaven.” Elijah had just pronounced that King Ahazaiah would die from the injuries he sustained in a fall because the king had sought answers from the god of Ekron, Baal Zebub. Ahaziaih was furious and ordered to have Elijah arrested. As we see in the verses above, when the captain and his fifty men came to arrest Elijah it didn’t go so well.

The captain barks a sarcastic insult, “Man of God” as if to say, “You’re not so powerful now are you little man.”  But this was not just an insult to Elijah but to Elijah’s God, and that would not go unchallenged.  There was no personal vindictiveness on Elijah’s part but a consuming zeal for the glory of God, which had been blatantly insulted.  Elijah was walking in God’s will and because of his personal relationship with the Lord he trusted God would be his vindicator.

Can you imagine the talk in the 12th row of the fifty men, “What did the prophet say?  I can’t hear him.” And suddenly when they looked to the sky their question was answered as the fires of acceptance at Mount Carmel became the fires of judgment.  So, walk in God’s will today as He reveals it through His Word and you can rest in the fact that He is on your side.

His will be done,
