Deuteronomy 8:5
You should know in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the Lord your God chastens you.
Deuteronomy 8:5
I grew up in fear of my father. Not that he was abusive by any means, but if I was disobedient, I knew a spanking was coming. I don’t remember being spanked too often, but I remember that when it happened, I was scared, mad, and confused as to why someone who claimed they love me would want to chasten me. It wasn’t until I became a father and had the responsibility of raising children who would grow to become the next generation that I understood the art of discipline. To be honest, I got most of my tips from my wife who taught elementary school and wouldn’t stand for disobedience in the classroom.
I honestly don’t remember if I spanked my children when they were young, but I did discipline them. I took away privileges, technology, and sent them to their rooms with a stern “fear of dad” voice. I may have even yelled at them in anger or frustration. But I knew that one day they too would have to raise children, and as the saying goes, “Better you cry now, than I cry later.” Our Heavenly Father loves us so much and wants the very best for us which is why He chastens those He loves. If He didn’t care, He would let us run wild with our free will and learn nothing from our actions like a neglectful parent. Instead, He disciplines His children so there can be forgiveness, reconciliation, and growth. He never stops loving us, which is why He chastens us.
God Bless,
