Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

John 15:13

Jesus tells the disciples there is no greater love than laying down your life for another. It gave them insight as to what was about to occur and why it was going to happen. God was about to display His love for His creation. In the above verse, we see Jesus saying this to His disciples a few hours before He was to go to the cross. It was this love, this agape love, that Jesus always displays, not because we have earned it or deserved it but because Jesus, the Savior of mankind, has given us the highest display of love.

This is the type of love that we as believers should always reflect to those around us. A love that leads us to lay down our life, our desires, a love that gives everything that we have for the benefit of others. This isn’t a love that we are able to produce on our own but rather it is a love that is reflected the closer we walk with the Lord. In those moments when we don’t want to love those around us, may we not forget that Jesus showed this type of love towards us when we wanted nothing to do with Him. Romans 5:8 says that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us, showing us His love.
