I’m sure you’ve noticed that even from a distance, it’s pretty easy to tell where someone is looking. The slightest eye movement can give away where your gaze is going. That’s why basketball players train to look the other way so they can execute the “no-look-pass.” That’s also why law enforcement and Secret Service officers wear sunglasses.

King David wrote Psalm 32 after he realized God had forgiven him for his sin with Bathsheba. In verse 8, he takes a promise of God and is inspired to give it a unique perspective. The promise is that God will instruct and teach us the way we should go, but the method is that our loving Father would do that with a glance. Not shouting or pointing an accusing finger but by looking in the direction we need to go.

There are two things that I love about this picture. One is that in order to know where someone is gazing, you have to look at their face. We don’t need to look at the circumstances around us but rather into the loving eyes of our Lord. The other is that once we see where someone is looking, you need to turn your head and see what they are looking at. Where is God directing us? We can look into His lovely face in worship and prayer and then see where we need to go through the eyes of His tender Word.
