John 15:15
“No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
John 15:15
When one thinks of the word “servant,” it usually comes with negative connotations. We might envision someone trapped under the heavy hand of a tyrant or a merciless boss who doesn’t care about our feelings. Servant has gone from being a word used to describe one who serves another to being billed as “slavery.” The Bible makes it clear in this passage that because of what Jesus did on the cross, we are worthy to be called friends of God. In addition, all of this has been made known to us in the Scriptures.
This should be a great comfort to us when we feel unworthy to approach the throne of grace and ask of our Lord and Savior. We can be free-minded and at ease knowing that we are no longer strangers to Jesus as a servant would be to his or her boss. Abraham was referred to as a friend of God in the book of James, and as such, we too, are called friends. James 2:23 says Abraham believed in God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness, and he was called a friend of God.
We are able to enter into the restful arms of our Savior as His friends and not as a servant to their estranged master. We have full access to God’s word and His plans and desires. No secret has been kept from us in His word, and no chasm exists that His love does not bridge. Indeed, we are called friends of God!
