During my time in the military, we were taught over and over the importance of everyone knowing their part to play in case a crisis should arise. To be honest, drilling over and over began to feel burdensome to the point that we would find ourselves becoming complacent. It wasn’t until a real emergency arose that we could see the reasons behind all the training and realized how important it really was. Why is it important for us to know that others can be relied on? The answer is simple: when a crisis comes about, there is less of a chance for us to fail because we are not relying on our own strength but on the strength of numbers.

In the book of Hebrews, we are taught that we should not neglect the opportunity to meet together so that we may encourage and uplift one another. The “training” that takes place on Sunday mornings and throughout the week where we worship is for the building up of the body so that we can stand firm in those moments of weakness and attack. When Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes 4:12, he understood that there is power in numbers. And when one is being attacked, the attacker will have less of a chance if one stands in numbers against him.

Let’s never take for granted the power of numbers. And let us take advantage of opportunities to gather and uplift so that we, as God’s people, can come together for worship, fellowship, and strengthening.
