Luke 22:42-43
Jesus said, Father if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done. Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
Luke 22:42-43
Jesus, being found in human form as you and me, did not look forward to suffering any more than you or I would. As He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane while awaiting His arrest and trial, He prayed that God would let His awful fate pass from Him. However, knowing that He was sent from the Father for a specific purpose, He was willing to let God’s will be done in His life. He knew that in order to gain, He had to be willing to lose something. In the case of our Lord and Savior, Jesus knew His life would have to be taken so that others might live.
There have been times in my life when I wrestled with God over the smallest things. Eventually I surrendered to His will and learned how much better it is to let Him do what He needs to in my life. And then there are times that I dig my heels in and refuse to let His will be done because fear has convinced me that I know best. But then I think back to my Savior and how He was willing to give all, including His life for a sinner like me. It is then that I realize that my moment of surrender is also the moment of conquest. John Henry Jowett once said, “When I consecrate my weakness I put on strength and majesty like a robe.” Not our will, but His!
