Matthew 6:16-18
Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Matthew 6:16-18
These verses help all of us to examine ourselves for a healthy heart check. As a Christian, why do we do the things we do? Jesus didn’t oppose disciplines like fasting, but He opposed doing it for show or as an empty ritual. Spiritual disciplines like fasting, prayer, and Bible study are meant to draw us closer to God, not to impress others or earn favor with God.
So, take a quick inventory of your own spiritual practices. Are they life-giving encounters with God or have they become routine? Are you excited for the encounter or do you dread the obligation? Perhaps it’s time to try a new spiritual discipline or approach an old one with fresh eyes. Remember, the goal is always deeper intimacy with God and soon it won’t be a discipline anymore, it will be a soothing for your soul.
