Ecclesiastes 2:22-23
For what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart with which he has toiled under the sun? For all his days are sorrowful, and his work burdensome; even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.
Ecclesiastes 2:22-23
Here, at the beginning of the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon is weighed down by the meaninglessness of life. He explored all manner of life’s pleasures and pursuits and found nothing but emptiness. Essentially, he said he would live his life for his own happiness. It reminds me greatly of our modern society. Everyone is constantly searching and striving for happiness, which they will not find apart from Christ.
The next verse is, “Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.” Solomon concludes that all is vanity apart from God. That a life lived for one’s own pleasure is truly meaningless, but on the contrary, there is nothing better for a man than to live a life with God and for God.
