Ephesians 2:1
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins.
Ephesians 2:1
Paul starts chapter two with some great news for the Ephesian believers, “You were dead, but God has made you alive again.” That’s pretty good news! But along with that good news comes bad news to those who don’t believe, you’re dead!
Dead is not a great place to find yourself, because apart from God stepping in to help you, we really can’t do much to rectify the situation. When we’re “dead in trespasses and sins,” there’s not much we can do to help ourselves out.
Death is separation, and we see it in three ways in the scriptures. There is physical death, spiritual death, and eternal death. Spiritual death is what Paul is speaking of here. Physically our bodies are alive but spiritually we are dead, separated from a relationship with God due to our sin, and if we die physically in that state, eternal death will follow.
There was no hope for us in this fallen state, so apart from God’s grace, we didn’t have a chance to defeat death and have eternal life. Thanks be to God for His grace to us.
