Ephesians 5:8
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
Ephesians 5:8
Notice that Paul doesn’t say here that “You were in the darkness” or “You were children of the darkness,” both of which would have been true, but he states, “You were darkness.” The point being made here is that you were not just a victim, being in the darkness, but that you were a willing participant, contributing to the darkness. The truth is that your life is going to contribute to evil or good in this world, darkness or light. Without Jesus, we are darkness, but in Christ we are light.
Jesus said in John chapter 8, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life,” and again in chapter 9 He said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” And now as “children of the light,” the Lord causes us to shine. “You are the light of the world…” Jesus said in Matthew 5: 14, and again in verse 16, He instructs us to, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Since God has turned on His light in us, we should live as those in the light, not stumbling around in the dark like before, but as a beacon to those who are lost in the darkness.
