Esther 6:1-2

That night the king could not sleep. So one was commanded to bring the book of the records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king. And it was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, the doorkeepers who had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.

I love those places in Scripture where we see the sovereign hand of God working completely behind the scenes. It gives me such great assurance that He is in control even when I can’t see it or don’t recognize it. In this account, the king of Persia suddenly and “coincidently” has a very restless and sleepless night. Now, you would think that he would call for some soothing music or a warm drink, but instead, he commands them to bring the records of the chronicles. Now, the servants could have picked any volume, but they “just so happened” to grab the one that included a brave and noble act performed by Mordecai for which he was never rewarded. He had saved the king’s life. Mordecai, a Jew, along with all his people, was destined for extermination by the hand of wicked Haman. This discovery by the king turned the entire situation around.

Are there times when you feel God is absent? Maybe He’s too busy, and your situation has escaped His gaze. A sleepless night, just the right volume of the books, a delayed reward, God is always at work whether we see it or not. We can always trust that He will have us where He wants us when He wants us there. And there’s no better place to be than in the center and depth of His will.
