Exodus 18:17-18
So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself.”
Exodus 18:17-18
Personally, I have never had a hard time asking for help. My disposition is that of someone who welcomes help in difficult times. I’ve learned through experience that things can be hard, and I will always welcome a helping hand. Since most of my life required me to do physical jobs, help was not only appreciated but also encouraged. But when it comes to spiritual matters, there is always a sense of “I got this, God” that rears its ugly head with me.
God indeed called Moses to lead the children of Israel into the promised land, and He always equips those He calls. But something about God calling us to a task will often lead us to think it is our burden to carry alone. When Moses’ father-in-law Jethro came to Moses with his advice, it was coming from a place of care and, most definitely, wisdom. Someone who listens to wise advice is also themselves wise. Instead of letting a task overwhelm you, understand that, as many parts of one body, we work together better as a whole than as individuals. Don’t let pride or ownership take away the opportunity to see how God designed us to work together.
