John 4:31-33

John 4:31-33

In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying “Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?”
John 4:31-33

The disciples had just got back from getting some food for everyone and they wanted to make sure that Jesus got something to eat. So they urged Him, “Lord, we got this food for you, eat some of this!” Jesus saw how preoccupied they were with food and that they didn’t say or even ask anything about His conversation with the Samaritan woman who had just left. So Jesus responds with,” I have food to eat that you don’t know about.” And the first reaction from His disciples was,” Did someone already get Him something?

Of course, Jesus knew what they were thinking, and so He probably looked them in the eyes, maybe smiled a little, shook His head, and said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work.”

If you are like me, food is one of those things that can really preoccupy our mind. What should I have for breakfast, and then for lunch or for dinner? Italian, Mexican, Chinese? A person can go on and on about food. So here Jesus says,” I know you went and got food for us, but my food, the thing that preoccupies my thoughts, is doing the will of my Father.” How many of us can say serving the Lord is our food and that the thing that preoccupies our thoughts is serving God?

Hungry to serve my Lord,
