Luke 13:5

Luke 13:5

I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.

Luke 13:5

In the first five verses of Luke 13, Jesus used two current events to teach on repentance.  The first was Pilate’s brutal slaughter of Galileans (v1), and the second was the accidental death of eighteen, when a tower fell in Siloam (v4). After recounting both incidents, Jesus asks the same question: Did these people experience these tragedies because they were worse sinners than others?  His answer was the same in both cases, and it is recounted in today’s verse.  These calamities were not experienced because their sin had been noted by God to be a higher degree than their neighbors, but the path after death without Christ is the same for all.  We are all destined to perish because of our sin.

We all are born with a sin problem, and by default our destiny is eternal separation from God. Jesus was sent from heaven as the means to conquer sin and to provide all an opportunity to spend eternity with God.  The solution? Repent of your sins and put your faith in Jesus, who took the punishment for our sin upon Himself by going to the cross.  Praise God for His enduring love for us.
