Matthew 5:7

“Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.”  

Matthew 5:7

This is all about giving what we ourselves have received.  God has given us mercy; Jesus calls us to be merciful.  Mercy is not getting what we deserve and God gave us mercy, He did not hold our sin against us. So a merciful person not only empathizes with people that are hurting but is willing to jump in and do something to help. A merciful person doesn’t retaliate when they’ve been hurt or wronged but lets the Lord vindicate the situation if it’s needed.  When we are willing to do that, the promise is, we will in turn receive mercy, according to God’s will.
