Message: “The Fall of the South” from Jack Abeelen

A message from the series “1 & 2 Kings 2005-2006.” 118 years after the fall of the North, the Southern Kingdom began to fall. After the death of good king Hezekiah, his son, Manasseh began to reign. We are told that this man did more than any other king to sink the people into idolatry. In fact we are told that Manasseh seduced the nation into more evil than the nations whom the Lord destroyed under the leadership of Joshua. The study concludes with Pastor Jack looking at the last good king Josiah and the reforms he brought about. After he is killed in battle, the Southern Kingdom’s remaining kings were all evil who ushered in the demise of Jerusalem.

This study looks at Hezekiah, the good king of Judah, who restored spiritual worship among the people. Because of Hezekiah’s relationship with the Lord, his intercession brought deliverance from the intended destruction by the Assyrians where in one night a single angel destroyed 186,000 soldiers. The end of Hezekiah’s reign included a miraculous recovery from an illness and God graciously extending his life by 15 extra years. Unfortunately, this was a time when pride caused him to get away from the Lord.

A message from the series “1 & 2 Kings 2005-2006.” In chapter 11 of 2 Kings the focus shifts back to the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Years earlier, Jehoshaphat had arranged a marriage between his son, Jehoram, and Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel. After her son, King Ahaziah was executed by Jehu, she sought to take the throne by killing all of the royal heirs. However, the godly priest, Jehosheba, hid young Joash for six years. Then when the time was right, Jehosheba conceived a plan to put this young heir on the throne and kill Athaliah. This resulted in a spiritual revival with repairs being done to the Temple. Chapter 13 shifts back to the North and the final days of Elisha.
