Nahum 1:7

Nahum 1:7

The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.

Nahum 1:7

Nahum’s book prophesies the destruction of Nineveh, while also declaring God’s anger with the city. The book opens though with a hymn (Nahum 1:2-8). Verse 3 proclaims that the Lord is slow to anger on one hand, but will not acquit the wicked, and today’s verse affirms the goodness of God and His care for those who trust in Him (the word “knows” can be translated as “cares for.”)

I have read or heard it claimed that the God of the Old Testament is not the same God as the New Testament, saying that the Old Testament God is wrathful, judgmental, and vengeful, whereas the New Testament God is loving, gracious, and kind. I sometimes wonder if those making the claim have read the Old Testament carefully, because it is filled with examples of God’s longsuffering, grace, mercy, and love as evidenced in today’s verse (for example, turn one book back in your Bible and read Micah 7:18-19).

It doesn’t take long to see evidence of God’s love and mercy in the Bible. From the very beginning, God shows his love by placing Adam and Eve in the beautiful and perfect Garden of Eden. All is well, until they sin, but God at that point immediately sets into motion His ultimate plan of salvation in Genesis 3:15.

Praise God that His love for us is from everlasting to everlasting, and the God that created us is the same God that redeemed us.  He never changes and neither does His love for us.
