Proverbs 25:28
Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.
Proverbs 25:28
When we think about the fruits of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23, we hardly think that self control is a gift of the spirit. But here we get a picture of how important it is to have self discipline as a part of our daily lives. In ancient times, a city was only as strong as its walls that protected them from outside threats. If there were no walls that meant the city was always vulnerable to the attacks of its enemies, and thus led to a broken city. Our lives are no different if we lack discipline in areas of our lives that leave us open and vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy.
This is why we are to be disciplined in all areas of our lives, specifically with our walks with the Lord. We are to have discipline that leads us to spend time with God in His Word, in prayer, lying at His feet so we can be like a city with strong walls surrounding us. If we lack discipline we become easy targets for the deceit, the lies, and the motives of the enemy. May we take this as an encouragement that leads us to build spiritual disciplines in which we will grow in wisdom and understanding, holding on to God’s truth as our defense.
For His Kingdom,
