As in water face reveals face, So a man’s heart reveals the man.

Today’s verse uses a physical example to demonstrate a spiritual principle.  Water is reflective and can mirror objects that are at the same angle to the water as your eyes. What you see is not the actual object but a reflection of the object, but the reflection gives you an accurate indicator of what the real object looks like. 

Likewise, what goes on in the heart reflects the spiritual state of man. For example, Matthew 15:18 says that the things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and when those things are bad, that defiles a man.  Jesus says in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” In other words, the things that we are prioritizing and seeking after in our heart can reflect our spiritual condition.  

Simply assessing what we focus on routinely can indicate to us how our walk is with God. Are we chasing after more overtime hours or spending way too much time in front of the TV? Has our quiet time with the Lord been pushed out of the way to make room for other daily activities? If so, then our heart is prioritizing earthly treasure above heavenly treasure, and therefore our spiritual life is suffering.  What is your heart reflecting today?
