Psalm 31:19

Oh, how great is Your goodness, Which You have laid up for those who fear You, Which You have prepared for those who trust in You In the presence of the sons of men!

Psalm 31 is an example of how to pray from the life of David, as many of the psalms are. As part of the books of wisdom in the Old Testament, they speak to our present-tense daily relationship with God; prayer is a large part of that! It was written at a time of great distress for David, though we cannot say for certain when he wrote it. But it has encouraged many others over the years. Jeremiah quotes Psalm 31:13 six times in his writings as he speaks of the trials he faced in life.

Jonah quotes Psalm 31:6 and Psalm 31:22 while lying in the belly of that great fish. David himself quotes some parts of it in Psalm 71, and our Lord Jesus’ final words on the cross were a quote from Psalm 31:5, “Into your hands, I commit my spirit.” Our verse this morning is the last part of David’s prayer as he has brought his concerns, worries, fears, and doubts before the Lord. Nothing has changed yet except David’s attitude. He knew the goodness of God awaited those who feared and trusted in Him, and David was determined to be that man. May we be those men and women as well today!
