1 Corinthians 6:20
For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians 6:20
Every time I hear a person utter the words, “I can do what I want, it’s my body,” I want to tell them simply, “Then show me the receipt!” I like to believe that is how Jesus might respond if someone declared a statement to Him like that. On the other hand, our wonderful Savior would only need to stretch out His hands and reveal the nail scars that He bore for their sins, proving, in fact, that He paid the price for their life. The last words of the verse just prior to this one read, “And you are not your own.” Truly we have been bought at a price, one that we alone could never pay.
Paul would write in the book of Romans chapter 12 that we are to, “Present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.” It can be hard to present something as a sacrifice if we feel we have total ownership over it. As Christians, we were created by God and bought at a price by His Son Jesus, and we cannot give something that we do not own. Instead, we belong to the One who paid for our sins when we asked for His forgiveness and for His will in our lives. You and I were bought at a price, what we should seek to do is honor the Creator, the One who paid the price, and live our lives in a way that brings Him glory.
