1 Samuel 14:1-2

1 Samuel 14:1-2

Now it happened one day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he did not tell his father. And Saul was sitting in the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron. The people who were with him were about six hundred men.

1 Samuel 14:1-2

We see here two very different examples from two very different leaders. Saul the king is a lazy man, not willing to step out to see what God might do, content to just sit in the shade and eat pomegranates. But then there is his son Jonathan, the complete opposite of his father. He just wanted to go out and see what God might do, not willing to just sit around.

God’s desire was to deliver Israel from the Philistines, the Lord had made that clear to Samuel in 1 Samuel 9, saying that His desire was to use Saul greatly, but there he sat eating pomegranates. Jonathan went out not knowing what would happen, but he couldn’t just sit and do nothing, so he went to see what the situation was and to see how God might use him.

Do you want God to use your life but you aren’t quite sure how He will do it? I would encourage you to get up and go see where the need is and let the Lord direct you from there. Jonathan would find God’s will and victory, the only thing Saul found was pomegranate stains on his shirt. Whose example will you follow today?
