1 Samuel 24:4
Then the men of David said to him, “This is the day of which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it seems good to you.’” And David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
1 Samuel 24:4
As King Saul and 3,000 of his best men were out looking for David, who was running for his life, Saul takes a break and goes into a cave for a rest. Unbeknownst to him, it was the very cave were David and his mighty men were hiding out.
This was decision time for David, as he sees his enemy helpless before him, he is urged on by his men to take Saul’s life. What an opportunity he had, with one thrust of his sword he could rid himself of his enemy and his days of suffering and running would be over. Then he could take the throne that God had promised to him.
But as his men watch David creeping up on Saul, waiting for him to deliver the fatal blow, they see David only cutting off a corner of Saul’s robe and returning. They must have thought him a coward or, at the very least, a fool to pass up such an opportunity.
We, as believers, have received great and awesome promises from God but it’s not up to us to fulfill them and make them happen. We are instead to obey His word and wait upon Him to bring them to pass in our lives. Those in the world might think us to be cowards or fools, but God will reward us with contentment and faith.
