Matthew 5:37

Matthew 5:37

“But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”

Matthew 5:37

Are you known as a person of your word?  Will you do what you promise? Can someone take you into their confidences and know you won’t spread it? So how do we achieve or maintain that kind of integrity?  It’s really quite simple — just be absolutely honest and say ‘yes’ or ‘no’!(BTW it is okay to say ‘no’ which is certainly better than lying.)

Just a single word will do because anything beyond that has the potential of turning evil. Like when we vow to be faithful to a husband or wife, our simple “I do” should serve as a permanent seal of our fidelity.  Jesus is teaching that our conversation should be so honest, and our character so true, that others would indeed take us at our word.

Yes I will, and no I won’t,
