2 Peter 3:8-9

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:8-9

“One day is as a thousand years and a thousand years”…  Peter tells us we have to remember to look at things from God’s perspective. If you go out to the desert and look up into the night sky, you will see hundreds of stars. The light from some of those stars was created thousands of years ago. Light travels at 186,000 miles a second, what we see now happened a long time ago. That can be hard to get our head around. Yet God sees the whole picture at once. He is not constrained by time as we are. We live minute by minute, day to day, year after year,  but not the Lord. In Romans 8:30, we read, “Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified,” all written in the present tense. Peter wants us to be confident in God’s promises concerning our future as well, that He will return in His timing.

So what is He waiting for? “He is not slack concerning His promise.”  He is not slow or just loitering in Heaven, He’s patient. Just think if God had our patience, or made the rash decisions we do. That’s a scary thought, isn’t it? How many of us would be saved today if Jesus returned 5, 10, or 15 years ago?  Thank God for His patience! So we have a great answer for the scoffers who question God’s return —  “He’s waiting for you, because He loves you!”
