Proverbs 18:12
Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.
Proverbs 18:12
I love the way of the proverbs in terms of comparison: before destruction there is to be found with men a haughty or arrogant heart; before honor, there must be found humility in heart. This proverb could be illustrated with David and Goliath. Goliath was a huge giant from the Philistine town of Gath who blasphemed Israel and their God. When David arrived at the battleground, Goliath’s blasphemy grew worse (1 Samuel 17:42-44).
David was only a teenager at the time, yet he knew God personally, which left him both humble and strong, stronger than King Saul, any of his brothers, and all the troops in camp. So, in humility, David went to battle, relying upon God, who gave him a great victory. (1 Samuel 17:45-47). At the same time, arrogant Goliath found himself pridefully walking into his own destruction. If you’re seeking to honor the Lord, humble yourself before Him today!
