In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

There are three genealogies of Jesus in the gospels. Matthew shows that Jesus came from Abraham through David to Joseph, his supposed father. Luke takes His genealogy all the way back to Adam to show that Jesus is fully man. This first verse of John takes His genealogy back to God and shows that Jesus is God and that He existed all along.

Between the three genealogies, we see Jesus as the Son of David, the Son of Man, and the Son of God. He fulfills all the prophecies and thus shows Himself to be the Messiah, the Chosen One, who lived as a man and gave up His life for us. No other man can fulfill these prophecies, which is why Jesus is the only way to the Father.
