Colossians 4:6
Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Colossians 4:6
Verses five and six of Colossians 4 instruct us how to act wisely to those outside of the church. Verse 5 focuses on acting wisely with our time, and verse 6 focuses on acting wisely with our speech. First, our speech should be gracious, involving both a gracious tone and gracious content. Jesus freely gave us grace when he died on the cross for us, and that grace freely poured into us should be poured out to others as we interact with the world for Christ.
Second, our speech should be seasoned with salt. In the culture, this metaphor meant winsome or witty speech. In other words, our speech should be charming, engaging, and clever, all with the intent of drawing people to Christ. Lord, may you enable us by your Spirit to be gracious as we speak to the lost, and may you give us the words of life to share with others so that they are drawn to you.
