Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18
Pride—the desire to impress others through exaggeration of possessions or accomplishments—was Satan’s original sin and remains a primary weapon against believers. When we care more about human opinion than God’s approval, we’re governed by the flesh. Pride drives us to shine and outshine others, seeking validation from temporary sources rather than eternal truth. Joseph’s response to Potiphar’s wife reveals the antidote: maintaining an eternal perspective by asking, “How can I sin against God?” The world’s applause fades quickly, but God’s “well done” echoes forever.
It would do us all some good to practice humility by celebrating someone else’s success, or serving anonymously, or confessing an area where pride has taken root. Remember: God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourself under His mighty hand, and He will lift you up in due time.
